Video is the next big thing. At a Cisco company visit, Tom Qian explained that “live streaming is changing the way we do business and how we educate people today.” He said that there is demand for a live, high-quality video experience that makes you feel that you are there talking to the person face-to-face. The telepresence experience is Cisco’s solution that integrates hardware and software to create that intimate in-the-same-room feeling whether it be for conference calls, chatting with friends or family, or teaching a class.

A group of New Mind students got to experience that technology first-hand and it was amazing! The clarity of the HD video, the eye-contact that the person in the video had with you, the crispness of the voices, and the experience of being in the same room with them was all beyond what any Skype or Face Time video was able to offer. Learn more about Cisco’s telepresence experience here.

The goal that Mr. Qian had for us that day was to give the New Mind students first-hand experience of the latest technology that Cisco is building. But we also learned about the empowering work environment that Cisco values; there is no time card to check in and out, there is no micro-management, you control what you do and you choose where you can be the most productive.

This behind-the-scene experience at Cisco was one to remember. For some of the students, it was their first time walking behind closed doors and they were inspired to see that as bilingual students with cross-cultural experience, they can be an invaluable asset for a global company like Cisco.

It is located in the American Tobacco Historic district, in Durham, NC.

Some of NEW MIND EDUCATION’s students and staff members were lucky enough to visit this part of the “Innovation Ecosystem” and saw some of Durham’s ascending entrepreneurs. The office space and design is fascinating there. The combination of historic buildings with modern style is unlike any office space in the Triangle.

There we saw some of the most INFLUENTIAL start-ups and leaders of thought in the Southeast. Some of our business students might WORK THERE someday.

We walked by start-ups such as ALBRIGHT DIGITIAL, which is a company that provides products and services to auto dealers that enable them to create stronger relationships with their new and existing customers.

We also passed in front of SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIAL SOLUTIONS whose purpose is to make organizations more competitive by enabling sustainability.

By developing specific skills and gaining confidence with the help of New Mind Education, Chinese students will gain the experiences necessary to work in with a business similar to the ones we visited at the Underground.

New Mind Alumn, Xinwei Wang, began his first year at NC State University in January. His journey has been challenging but also rewarding. Born in Beijing, Xinwei, had dreams to travel the world and study abroad!

With his parents’ support, Xinwei spent a year in Australia.

“Moving to Australia was my first time being independent. I was eating curry every day with my Host Family and studying at school. It was very lonely being there… difficult to make friends and I became homesick. I would hear my mom calling my name and I would get up to answer, and she wouldn’t be there.”

When Xinwei finally went back home to Beijing, he decided that he would continue his studies in America. With New Mind by his side, Xinwei applied and was accepted into NC State.

“When I first arrived in America, it was completely different than what I expected. You think that America is maybe lazy or something like that.. but it’s not… The community at New Mind was nice. It was easy to make friends, and we could get help from each other.”

For Xinwei personal relationships with those around him are important.

“Relationships in China are different than here in the US. It’s valued highly and people depend on each other. But in America everybody is independent and people are doing everything by themselves so I really appreciate having help from my adviser at New Mind. I felt, wow, someone here really cares about me.”

On graduation day, Xinwei was one of two to receive the New Mind Songtao Scholarship. He earned it through his personal growth as a student and his inspiring scholarship essay.

Now Xinwei is returning to New Mind as a student leader and mentor for current New Mind Students. We appreciate having his help!

If you would like to help us in building a community with our students, please email Yasmeen at ykashef@newmindedu.com.

Over the last two years, we have been creating a culture that celebrates the true love of learning. We are continuing to strive for a comprehensive and competitive solution to the question, how do we educate the next generation of global citizens? We are finding that the seeds planted are starting to bloom. In a letter to our advisers over the holiday break, New Mind student, Yangchao Wang, said:

“First of all, I’d like to say “Merry Christmas!” and best wish to you and your family. Secondly, I’d like to say” Thank you “. Thank you to help me to adjust my new life, both studying and living in the U.S. And I had an unforgettable time in the past 4 months.

In my mind, Christmas may be similar to Spring Festival. It is the most important day in the year. At Spring festival, family has a big dinner and watch Spring Festival gala until midnight. At that time, people will play the firework to celebrate the new year and wish to be healthy and have more money in the coming year.”

Just like Yangchao Wang, students can enroll in New Mind programs with the expectation that they will come to know themselves better, see themselves as global citizens, realize their full potential, and finally know the power of claiming personal ownership of their academic journey.

Last Saturday on January 5th, four more students began the New Mind journey as our newest participants in our University Preparatory Program, and we are excited to participate in a revised curriculum. Over the break, we reflected and listened to students’ feedback. As a result, we have enhanced the curriculum, and adjusted our services to better fit our students’ unique needs.

We look forward to having you join us in a productive new year, and wish you the best in your endeavors!

Many educators have been asked this question: What is the goal of education? What is it that educators need to teach so that their students can become the next generation of global citizens? The answer to the first question is simple. Collectively, we all want students to realize their full potential, have a fulfilling life, and make a contribution to society. The answer to the second question, however, is not so easy. In trying to find some answers, we have met some challenges along the way but we have also found our strengths.

During our recent participation in the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) national conference in Washington, DC, New Mind’s Michael Chen learned that many organizations are trying to find out how to educate the next generation of global citizens. One of the influential leaders in this field is Dr. Tony Wagner, Innovation and Education Fellow at Harvard University. At the conference, Dr. Wagner said that the key in driving future job creation and economic development here in the US is by having a generation of innovators. In a globalized world where knowledge has become a commodity, the primary purpose of education is no longer about knowledge itself, but rather about how we make use of that knowledge. Furthermore, in order to create innovators, three key aspects of education need to be revised: expertise, critical thinking skills, and motivation. Among these aspects, motivation is the most debated among universities and educators.

These findings have been extremely enlightening to New Mind, as we strive to cultivate and inspire the next generation of global talent. In the past few semesters we have also realized that the most difficult part of our process is in instilling motivation in our students’ minds. However, we have done a good job by focusing on the real results of inter-cultural competence, campus engagement, and future leadership skills. Even though we don’t have the traditional sense of a classroom, and we don’t have precedents to fall back on, the level of feedback and engagement from our students has indicated the aspects that we’ve done right. As mentioned often by Michael Chen, the founder of New Mind, “We have authentic, and trustworthy relationships with our students.” It is because of these foundations that we are able to have New Mind students realize their full potential, have a fulfilling life, and make a contribution to society.

Last week New Mind students participated in one of the most celebrated experiences of being an NC State University student: Homecoming. The experience of watching the parade of troops, the trumpeting marching band, the decorated floats, and the deans of colleges rolling down Hillsborough Street in their red convertibles on November 2nd was a captivating one. New Mind students along with family, friends, and alumni cheered on NC State and its football team.

Bridging cultural barriers can be a challenge, but through participation and celebration, New Mind students were able to understand what it means to have school spirit at NC State. As it was their first time witnessing such an event, the students were awed by the procession and preparation that was put into the floats. The music, which they identified with, the mascots asking for high-fives along the way, and the Wolfpack hands which were high in the air, all led up to the revelation that we love celebrating our school, our football, and our alumni.

As part of the New Mind’s focus on experiential learning, giving New Mind students the chance to experience mainstream culture first-hand has helped them understand and bridge cultural divides. And the best part of it all is that New Mind students want to create a float next year, and become one of the leaders at the NC State Homecoming parade!

In an effort to promote diversity and offer an engaging hands-on experience, New Mind’s UPP@NCSU worked with several local high schools to give students learning Chinese the opportunity to engage cross-culturally. In the last two weeks of October, Cary Academy, Durham Academy, and Enloe Highschool hosted New Mind students in their classrooms to hear them present and share their Chinese stories, traditions, and customs.

This experience for New Mind students was not only important in developing necessary public speaking skills; it was also inspiring. One of the New Mind students, Vincent Jiang, said that it was “wonderful to see American people learning about my language and my culture just as much as I am learning about their language and their culture.”

As excited as he and his peers were about seeing the Chinese classrooms in Cary Academy, the Cary Academy students were eager to have native Chinese speakers in their own classrooms. During Vincent’s presentation on the Chinese Zodiac, the Cary Academy students showed off their Chinese and impressed Vincent and his group with their knowledge of the Chinese language. After their presentation, the students were able to talk amongst each other and practice their Chinese and English language and even crack a few jokes along the way!

The success in this experience for New Mind isn’t in this one exchange alone, but rather in the development of a long-term relationship in which we, New Mind, can give back to our local community. We’ve invited the teachers from the local high schools to come to NC State and judge the New Mind students’ final presentations on their language and public speaking skills. There are also plans to repeat the cross-cultural exchange next semester. We hope to continue to engage our local community and build those lasting and mutually beneficial partnerships. If you would like to propose a new opportunity where we can work together for our students and for your organization, please contact us.

With China taking active steps to engage with and develop collaborative and profitable partnerships with the United States, New Mind Education invites Chinese students to learn here in North Carolina. At the Harvard Club dinner on October 4th, our very own Michael Chen along with two other panelists, NC Secretary of Commerce, Keith Crisco, and senior executive at Quintiles, Thomas Wollman, elaborated on engaging and building those collaborative partnerships in China.

China has the fastest-growing middle class in history and is moving from an export-driven economy to a consumption-based one. Given this state, China has a need for new products and services within the global economy. New Mind is taking the first step in that direction by enabling Chinese students to experience the unique value that higher-education in the United States has to offer. We are giving the students the necessary tools to build sustainable and successful businesses.

The second step in growing business partnerships with China is in facing limited resource challenges together. As the most populated nation in the world, China has a need for innovative solutions and is actively adopting new technologies. Michael Chen pointed out that when it comes to developing for those solutions, we need “new minds that are culturally aware so that we all can communicate and come up with solutions for a globalized economy.” By inviting students to learn here in the United States, we not only provide that cross-cultural learning environment, but we also plant the seeds for future collaborative partnerships with China.

By starting with education, New Mind can build pathways for companies like Quintiles, Lenovo, Ashley Furniture and others to find new minds that can tackle challenges with innovative and cross-cultural finesse!

On July 20th, employees of New Mind Education got together at University of North Carolina at Greensboro with New Quest to engage in a variety of team building activities in order to develop a better relationship with each other. They included an outdoor balancing game that requires the teams to balance on a platform evenly and a puzzle cards game that relies on members of the team to lay the cards in a certain order to build a story. These activities focused on communication, teamwork, and thinking outside the box. “I was surprised by so many meanings behind the activities,” Skylar __, an advisor on the New Mind Team, said. “I connected with everyone on the team through these activities, like knowing their ideas, listening to them, and learning how I can do to help the team through participation.” While not as physically strenuous as expected, each member that attended were able to locate their own personal strengths and weaknesses through their activities. “ I think it showed problems we could have as a big group structure,” Shane Riter, an instructor at New Mind, said. “I realized I interrupted people a little more than I think.” Afterwards, the team took some time to relax as they headed to the Village Tavern to enjoy lunch, followed by a bus tour around Greensboro. Overall, the trip was a bonding and enriching experience where members of the New Mind team were able to better understand how to work with a large group to the optimum level.

New Mind Education was fortunate to meet with seasoned educators Pablo Friedmann and Girija Mahajan to discuss their experiences with Teach for America. Both teachers discussed the impact of their Teach for America (TFA) Corps assignments (Pablo’s in Eastern NC, Girija’s in the South Bronx), and how they used the experience as a springboard into other educational pursuits. The two shared the qualities TFA looks for in its candidates, and some ways in which the organization supports its Corps members after completing their 2-year assignments. The New Mind team peppered Pablo and Girija with questions about teacher recruiting, class activities, and their plans for the future. Pablo is working on a non-profit educational advocacy group, and Girija is the new Program Coordinator for America Reads America Counts at Duke University. We were happy to meet with them and hear their rich stories about the lessons they learned in challenging environments as they worked tirelessly towards student success.
